Lagos Landlords and House Rents

In Lagos today if you do not have hundreds of thousands of Naira, you can't live in a mini-flat ( a room, a sitting area, kitchen, bathroom and Toilet). This is because the cost of rent is very high in the busy commercial city of Nigeria. To make matters worse, the Landlords won't take money for a year rent but only TWO years.

This is a city and state with a rent Law that strictly frowns at a two year rent payment. Governor of Lagos state Babatunde Raji Fashola while speaking at the 2014 Real Estate Unite event by 3Invest limited in Lagos City, once again emphasised that it is illegal in Lagos state for house owners to demand or collect two year rent in advance from tenants. He explained that, with the economy of the country in which salaries are paid to workers in arrears, it is abnormal and totally wrong for any landlord to demand two year rent in advance.
I hope they listen to you Governor, I live in Lagos and the Agency fees collected by real estate agents stands at two years whether one pays a one year rent or two years.
