Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) entrepreneurs in Lagos State may soon heave a sigh of relief as the All Peoples Congress (APC) governorship candidate in next month’s general election, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has promised to unvied new set of tax incentives to further spur the growth of the sector over the next four years.
Speaking while unfolding his economic blueprint for Lagos State last weekend, Ambode said his administration would support the growth of SMEs through the setting up policies that will create tax incentives that would make the environment more business-friendly.
The pledge is coming against the backdrop of very strong private sector agitation against the three tiers of government over multiple taxation and levies that tend to frustrate private sector enterprises in the state.
It was reported, for instance, that Lagos is among the states with the highest number of taxes and levies in the country, a development the organised private sector believes has been crippling genuine businessmen in the state.
But in a move to ease the cog in the wheel of the SMEs if elected, Amobode stated: “We will protect the growth of our small and medium scale enterprises by providing tax incentives and implementing government policies that will encourage the private sector to employ more citizens and foster economic development. We will boost internally generated revenue by improving the collection mechanism through e-governance. We will encourage the creation of a Corporate Social Responsibility Trust Fund (CSR-TF) by the private sector, to be managed by a Board of Trustees charged with the responsibility of identifying growth opportunities yearly and financing such opportunities to further boost economic development across sectors and communities in the state.”
According to him, the Lagos administration will introduce a 24/7 economy typical of a city state like Lagos, which will be followed with the setting up of a Lagos Employment Trust Fund (LETF) with N25 billion over four years, through an access to finance of a minimum of N1 billion annually across the five divisions in the state, to enable the youths and unemployed people have access to adequate financing for entrepreneurial ventures.
On education, Ambode promised that his administration will provide free education up to senior secondary school level to ensure that no child is denied the right to education, and will endeavour to provide one meal per day to students to guarantee a healthy learning environment. “Along with our bursary and scholarship initiatives for tertiary institutions, we will encourage the private sector to partner with government in this regard as part of their CSR. We will also deepen skills acquisition through technical and vocational training to create capacity for our informal sector.”
With respect to housing, he said the administration would create communities that are self-sustainable for residents to encourage even development across the state.
The APC gubernatorial candidate’s economic agenda also cover plans to boost the State Security Fund to scale up the successes recorded so far, pledging  to continue with the city lighting project through the expansion of the Independent Power Project (IPP) to enhance the security of lives and property across the state.
He assured that Lagos State under his leadership will embark on the acquisition of the latest advanced security communications technology that will track and monitor the daily activities of residents of the state.
With respect to the state’s agricultural transformation agenda, Ambode assured that his administration would build on the outgoing government’s efforts by opening up the virtually untapped aquatic and seafood resources by providing incentives for agricultural processing companies, thereby providing employment for the youth population.
He promised to increase the avenues to showcase its distinct and diverse Lagos cultures and traditions through the establishment of museums and heritage centers and creation of water parks for children and youths utilising prominent natural resources in the state.
In order to make the state a choice tourism destination in Africa, the APC gubernatorial hopeful said his administration “will also develop waterfront by providing recreational facilities and encouraging investors to invest more in tourism infrastructure. The state’s unique cultural heritage will be promoted and enhanced to attract tourists globally. This will also create a secondary market for job creation. We will create community sport centres to encourage our youth development.”
He said his government would pursue a fully integrated transport management system that takes into consideration roads, rail, water and walkways as means of mobility for ease of movement of residents in the city centres and the suburbs. “We will introduce and establish officially designated bus stops/routes in Lagos.”
On the transportation programme, the APC flag bearer said he will improve on the hectic traffic with construction of new roads and maintaining existing ones, as well as placing directional signs in strategic places while facilitating the use of Lagos inland waterways through improved channeling and dredging.
Ambode also assured that his government would ensure the provision of a network of access roads across the state complemented by excellent by-passes, pedestrian bridges, traffic intersections, public and amusement parks, while working toward making all public institutions and facilities to be of the highest standards and quality.Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) entrepreneurs in Lagos State may soon heave a sigh of relief as the All Peoples Congress (APC) governorship candidate in next month’s general election, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has promised to unvied new set of tax incentives to further spur the growth of the sector over the next four years.
