Over 13 cleaners arrested in the University of Johannesburg's protest

At least 13 cleaners at the University of Johannesburg's (UJ) Kingsway Campus, in Auckland Park, have been arrested for allegedly contravening a court order preventing violence on the campus.

The order, which has been obtained by employers, states that protesters are not allowed to be less than 500 metres from the campus.  The workers and some students are calling for an end to outsourcing at the university. The students also want registration fees scrapped.

On Friday, over 40 000 UJ students started writing their exams but not all of them were able to write. In the morning some students were left stranded after the cleaning staff and other students stopped two buses that were transporting students between campuses and forced them to disembark and join their protest march.

The protesters were marching from Doornfontein to the Kingsway campus in Auckland Park. Police gave the group 15 minutes to disperse or face arrest. They were down on their knees in the street, with arms raised.
